Read Genesis 41
“Shalom is not merely the absence of peace but mainly the restoring of brokenness back to wholeness.” ~ Pastor Jason
Main Claim: Even the frustrating problems of the present work toward God’s favorable purposes in the future.
Three Questions - From Genesis 41
What does this passage teach us historically?
Summary: In Genesis 41, we see Joseph brought out of prison to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams. These dreams reveal seven years of abundant harvest followed by seven years of severe famine over the whole earth.
The chapter begins with “After two whole years . . ” How does this beginning help us see Joseph’s sufferings and understand God’s sovereign, good, and wise will for his life?
After Joseph was brought out of prison and into Pharaoh’s presence, what answer does Joseph give Pharaoh in verse 16, and how does this answer shed light on the power and plan of God? What does “shalom” mean?
In verse 46, we read “Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh.” What are some events that Joseph experienced between the time he was seventeen years old (Gen.37:2) and up to entering the powerful position of second in command of Egypt? How do these years of events and experiences help us understand God’s providence and love for His people?
What are some ways Joseph’s life parallels Jesus’ life? How do these similarities point us to the gospel?
What does this passage teach us theologically?
God is in control of the future (v.32).
Look up and linger over Romans 8:28,29.
How does Romans 8:28 help you when you experience the trials and tribulations God has appointed for you?
How does Romans 8:29 provide perspective when you experience the trials and tribulations God has appointed for you?
What does this passage teach us practically?
We can trust God . . .
In the frustrating problems of our present. What is one “frustrating problem” you are currently facing? What does “trusting God” look like in this situation? What prayer request can you submit to your group to help you apply this message to this mess in your life?
To work for favorable purposes in our future. What are some signs of shalom that God is working:
Inside you? (panic decreasing)
Around you? (projects completing)
Amongst you? (people connecting)
