The Church - Week 3

Sunday September 27, 2020

  1. At the beginning of the sermon, Jason talked about how understanding the purpose of something helps you understand it’s design. He then highlighted a few “design epiphanies” - the box for aluminum foil, the tab on the top of the pop can, the flaps on the sides of juice boxes, etc. Have you had any of those moments where you realized the purpose for how something was designed and it really surprised and impressed you?

  2. In this section of the series on The Church, we answered the question “What is the purpose of the church?” Take some time to re-read Matthew 28:16-20

  3. As a review from the sermon, what is God’s 3-fold purpose for His church?

  4. According to Romans 12:1-2 - What is worship?

  5. What is the motive or “appeal” that leads to worship (vs 1)?

    • Why is it important that revelation precedes response in worship?

  6. Describe a time in your life when God’s revelation provoked you to worship. (This might be a confession of particular sin, a change in vocational direction, a break up, a change in budget and giving, adoption, etc)

  7. What does it mean to be a witness?

  8. How is God calling you to take a step further as a witness right now?

    • What roadblocks or tensions do you anticipate?

      (Be specific - don’t generalize.)

  9. Jason talked about how we are called to not only MAKE disciples, but also RAISE disciples. Why must disciples be raised/equipped? (Ephesians 4:11-16)

  10. What is one of the most impactful ways that the Church has nurtured your walk with Jesus?

  11. If every believer is responsible for accomplishing those 3 purposes of the church, how do you feel you are doing?

    • Do you ever fall into the habit of prioritizing 1 of them without focusing on the others?

    • Which is the most challenging for you?

  12. Take some time to pray that UBC (and you as a part of UBC) will be a church that accomplishes all 3 of these purposes.
