Dollars and Sense - God's Perspective of Money

Sunday, May 9, 2021

  1. Have you noticed any changes in your perspective on money this past week? Were there any instances where your financial choices were impacted by last week’s study?

  2. Last week, we talked about our money problem - the love of money leading to a discontented life. This week we are talking about having God’s perspective on money. Jason said “If we don’t see clearly about money, then we will function poorly with money.” What are some of the common perspectives about money in our culture today?

    • How many of these are true of the Church as well?

  3. Read Matthew 6:19-24 and pay attention to the differences between a cultural perspective of money and a Godly perspective of money.

  4. After reading Matthew 6, why are money, possessions, or “treasure” given to us?

    • What parts of your day to day view of money are challenged by that?

  5. This is reiterated in Luke 12:15-21. What does it mean to be “rich toward God”?

    • Why are we so prone to believe that life comes from our possessions?

  6. Matthew 6:21 shows us that our money is an indicator of our values. Based on the way your family used money during your growing up years, what were the values that were evident (both good and bad)?

    • What values are being shown by the way you use your money now (again, both good and bad)?

  7. Based on Matthew 6:24, Jason made a strong point that we are to use our money as “stewards, not owners.” What are the differences between the two?

    • What are the dangers of seeing ourselves as owners?

    • What are the freedoms that come from seeing ourselves as stewards?

  8. At the end of the sermon, Jason gave 3 personal application questions:

    • Does your current use of money indicate that you see yourself as an owner or a steward?

    • Does your current use of money indicate a growing love of God?

    • When the Lord judges your life, will your spending have any eternal reward?

  9. Is there anything about your use of money that you really need prayer for right now? (an area you need to confess, a decision you’re struggling to make, etc.)
