Father's Day 2021

Sunday, June 20, 2021

  1. This past weekend, we had a few big focuses: commissioning parents, challenging & encouraging dads, and installing new elders & deacons. Do you have any questions about the roles of elders & deacons? (See I Timothy 3:1-13

    • How are these 2 roles similar? How are they different?

    • How are you feeling about our elder & deacon teams at UBC?

  2. Both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day tend to bring up mixed feelings within people. Some have great relationships with their fathers and others have broken or non-existent relationships with them. If you could describe your relationship with your father in 1 sentence, what would you say?

  3. At the end of the service, our new elder team spent some time encouraging the fathers to lead their families in 3 specific ways. The first was from Harry Steck who encouraged us to set healthy expectations for our children. (Joshua 24:15b, Ephesians 6:4) In light of these 2 passages, what are some healthy expectations that we need to set for our families?

  4. The second challenge for how to lead our families came from Scott Dixon. He encouraged us to remember that our kids are not our savior - Jesus is our Savior. (Psalm 90:14, Colossians 3:20-21) What are a few sure signs that parents are wrapping up their identity in their children? Why are parents so prone to do this?

  5. The last challenge came from Pastor Jason Wing who shared that God’s grace provides both conviction of a father’s sin AND comfort for the sinful father. (I Corinthians 15:10, Romans 5:20) How does this challenge you? How does it comfort you?

    • Why is it important for us to live in light of the truth that “there is more grace in God than there is sin in you”?

  6. As you finish, spend some time praying in 3 ways:

    • For the fathers in your group in light of the 3 challenges that the elders shared.

    • For those who have hard or broken relationships with their fathers.

    • For our new elders and deacons
