Read Acts 21:1-16 together.
Remember what Scott called the “Big Picture” and reflect as a group.
Big Picture (First Point): Discerning the will of God begins with step-by-step obedience.
Remind the group of the following 3 points and discuss as you feel led.
Discerning the will of God is shaped by life’s circumstances
Discerning the will of God is strengthened in the context of spiritual friendship
Discerning the will of God starts with life’s most important question
Scott described 3 different common practices of discerning the will of God among Christian circles. What were they and have you used them?
(Hint: Peace test, sign test and spiritual test otherwise known as the close your eyes and point test)
Paul received a clear mission from the Lord as he marched towards Jerusalem.
Why did he not head the warnings of his Christian friends?
How can we be sure of God’s purpose for us even amidst conflicting voices?
You are leaning towards taking a new job with better pay and more convenient hours for you to be with your family. Your current work environment has been tough and it’s a bit hostile to the Gospel. However, your Christian coworker comes to you saying, “I really think you should consider staying. I’m getting a firm word from the Lord you are supposed to stay with our company and continue to represent Christ here.” How might you respond? What are some practical strategies for making a decision through a Christian lens?
Read Hebrews 5:11-14:
Considering this passage, how can you grow in your capacity to digest solid food?
What is one way the Lord is helping you grow in your Christian discernment?
Consider Romans 12:2:
How does cultural immersion in Godliness lead to discernment of God’s will in circumstances and life decisions?
What steps can you take today to allow God to “transform you by the renewing of your mind?”
What is your next step towards “fluency?”
For me to live is_______: How do you fill that blank? Please dig beyond Sunday School answers and be honest with your group on your current life priorities and drives.
(Hint: Three T’s to assess my priorities: where do I spend my time, talent and treasure?)
Close out your time with prayer for one another
