Main Idea: In the promised son, God removes our shame and brings our joy.
What does this passage teach us historically?
Isaac is born as an answered prayer and fulfillment of God’s promise.
Abraham follows the command of God and circumcised his son Isaac.
Sarah and Hagar have a conflict that leads to Sarah asking Abraham to remove Hagar and Ishmael. The Lord confirms this action.
God’s promise over Ishmael in Genesis 17:20 protects him and his mother as they wander.
What does this passage teach us theologically?
God keeps his promises.
How does this passage apply to our lives?
Trust God to keep his promises to you.
Trust God, who sent his promised Son for you.

Why does God do this for Ishmael? The story will follow Isaac as one of the fathers of Israel. Why does the narrative give us these highlights about Ishmael?
The fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham of an heir came pretty late in his life. What does this teach us about the timing of God’s follow-through?
Why is the history of Genesis beneficial for our walk with Christ? What perspective does it give you regarding your faith in God?
