Read Genesis 2:1-3

what does this text teach us historically?

  • The heavens and earth were completed by the Lord

  • God finished his work and rested on the seventh day

  • God blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy

What does this text teach us theologically?

  • Our all powerful God rested

    • Read and reflect on Isaiah 40:28. God does not grow weary yet he chose to rest

  • The Sabbath Day foreshadows our ultimate rest we find in Christ

    • Read and reflect on Colossians 2:16-17. How does keeping the Sabbath in the Old Testament foreshadow the coming of Christ?

what does this text teach us practically?

  • Learn to practice rhythms of rest

  • Find your true rest in Christ

Questions for greater discussion:

  • What was your upbringing in regards to keeping a sabbath or acknowledging “The Lord’s Day?” How is Sabbath understood in your home today? What rhythms of rest do you practice?

  • Read Mark 2:23-28. How does Jesus seem to regard the Sabbath in contrast to how the Pharisees are viewing the Sabbath?

  • What are some ways you struggle to rest? Do you find yourself regularly overworking or underworking? How do you need to submit these tendencies to the Lord?

  • Read Matthew 11:25-30. What does it look like practically to “rest in Christ?” What are some ways we tend to keep our own labors and heavy burdens instead of releasing them to the Lord?

  • How does resting correlate with your trust in the Lord? On a scale of 1 to 10, where is your trust level overall in your walk with the Lord? Do your rest patterns reflect a trusting heart?

Pray and close it out!!
