I Am: The Way, and The Truth, and The Life

Jesus is the Way

  • Jesus alone is the way to the Father

  • What does this mean?

    • The way leads to the Father

    • His way is the only way.

  • Why does it matter?

    • We all have gone our own way

    • Our sin separates us from Christ

    • Yet there is one way that leads us to the love of the Father

Jesus is the truth

  • Jesus is the truth. Everything He says and all He does it truth.

    • Jesus on earth bore witness to the truth (18:37-38)

    • Jesus told Thomas "I am the way the truth and the life.

    • Therefore, He can be trusted and is our objective foundation for belief. 

    • Why does this matter for every human being? No one can come to the Father except through Him.

Jesus is the life

  • Jesus is the life and He offers us this life.

    • All we need to do is accept him

    • The life to which He points is not Bios (physical life) but is Zoe (spiritual or eternal life)

    • It is a gift. We don't earn or deserve it.

    • Jesus freely gives this gift to those who believe in Him.

How should we respond?

  • Turn from pursuing your own way and follow His way

  • Stand for truth in a world which rejects objective reality.

  • Live for spiritual life over merely physical life. 

Questions For Greater Discussion

  • Of the three categories Jesus applied to Himself, which one grabbed your attention the most and why? 

  • How might this message strengthen your walk of faith and provide conviction and encouragement to share your faith with others?

  • If you have not already, consider memorizing John 14:6 and slowly meditate on the magnificent claim Jesus gives. Only God could could make these self-advancing statements; otherwise Jesus is a liar or lunatic (as CS Lewis famously said). What heart changes might you experience as you pray over and meditate on this verse? 

  • Mention among yourselves some ways you may use these insights in your conversations with believers and with unbelievers.  What difficulties might you experience when trying to speak this verse into the lives of others? How might you overcome these challenges? 

  • What are a couple of means of grace that you might employ by faith that will clear the mind and strengthen the resolve to live out John 14:6? When and How will you incorporate these means to strengthen your walk of faith? 

  • Lastly, talk about the beauty and joy we experienced as the young generation stepped up and lead us all in worship of the Christ and proclamation of His Word.  How can we increase our prayers for the dawning of revival in our church? for our children's salvation? for the reawakening of our hearts to express faith, love, and hope?
