Wonders of His Love - Part 1

Main text: 1 John 4:7-10

Two passages to consider as we think on this topic:

Discuss the main points:

  • What “God is love” doesn’t mean

1. It doesn’t mean that God is EQUAL to love

2. It doesn’t mean that God is ONLY love

  • What “God is love” does mean

  1. ***vs 7 - Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

  2. ***vs 7 - Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

  3. ***vs 8 -  Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

  • How “God is love” was shown to the world

  1. ***vs 9-10 - In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Questions for greater discussion

  • Is there a way in which we can worship love over worship of God? What does that look like?

  • How do we properly balance the attributes of God in our theology? In conjunction with this conversation, discuss Exodus 34:6-7

  • How can we rightly understand God’s love contrasted with his wrath towards our sin? How does the Gospel display this tension?

  • What are some ways that “God type love” should display itself in our families and Christian communities?

  • God is fully satisfied in the sacrifice of the son. How does that reflection change your interactions with and perception of God?

  • How does the sending of Christ display the love of God to us? Why does that dictate our definition of love?

  • What are some ways that God’s love directly affects our community in our growth group?

Pray for one another and close it out!
