The Gospel & Race
Sunday June 28, 2020
Is there a moment in your life when you first recognized that racism existed?
Were you always aware or did your eyes have to be opened in some way?
Take some time to read Acts 10:24-43 aloud.
In this passage, we see that the Jewish law did not permit Jews to associate with Gentiles. The Jews had written ethnic supremacy into their laws! We know that America has a history of that same thing. What is a Christ-follower’s role when they see systemic injustice?
How has racism impacted the church in the U.S.?
How do racial biases, or “partiality”, impact the Great Commission (Mattew 28:18-20)?
Do you have relationships with people who are ethnically different from you? If so, have you had a conversation with them about how the racial tension in our country impacts them?
Do you find yourself afraid to engage in conversations about racial & ethnic hostility? If so, why?
What scriptural truths do we need to apply in order to have more freedom to engage?
Do you find yourself more prone to talk or listen when having conversations about race?
Do you think the Church in America avoids issues of social justice? Does UBC?
How does Jesus exemplify the breaking down of racial barriers?
How would UBC look different if we all lived out Gospel-based responses to ethnic hostility?
What is one step that you know in your heart that you need to take after hearing the challenges presented in the sermon?
Is there anything else that stood out to you from Sunday’s discussion?
Take some time to pray and ask God to reveal any sinful ways that may have been in your heart or mind and if He does, take some time to repent. Then ask Him to allow you and UBC to be a part of the solution.
