True Light - Week 1

Sunday, November 28, 2021

  1. Review the background of the book of John. (See Jason’s recap here.

    • Which John wrote this?

    • What do we know about him?

    • What was John’s purpose in writing his gospel? (See John 20:30-31)

  2. Read the main text for this week - John 1:1-5

  3. How do we see the divinity of Jesus highlighted in this passage?

    • John 1:14 helps us understand the references to “the Word” in vs 1-5.

  4. In vs 1, it says “the Word was with God, and the Word was God”. Jason said this was showing that “Jesus was entirely God, but not the entirety of God.” How does this play into our view of the Trinity?

    • What is the Trinity?

    • How are the 3 parts of the Trinity the same? How are they different?

  5. When you read vs 3-4, what do you notice about Jesus’ connection to both creation and life?

    • How does this connect to our Christian view of meaning & purpose?

  6. Why does it matter that we care about doctrine, specifically doctrines like the Trinity, Creation, etc?

    • Why does it seem that some people avoid (or dislike) doctrine?

  7. In vs 4-5, we see the metaphor of darkness versus light. How does the light of Christ change the way we see everything around us?

  8. How does the story of Jesus show us that darkness cannot overcome the light?

    • How have you seen that to be true in your story?

“The more you embrace the truth about Christ, the brighter He will shine to you at Christmas.”
