Asking For A Friend - Week 1 (2023)

Sunday, April 16, 2023

Before your meeting this week, you might want to peruse the elders’ position paper on “How to Think Biblically about Voting.” You can find it here. Also be sure to remind your group about its existence.

  1. When you think about the world we live in, what issues are important to you/most concern you?

  2. What were the issues at hand in Rehoboam’s day in 1 King 12:1-15?

  3. What can we glean from this passage about the political sphere and our engagement in it as Christians?

  4. (If you have time, you might use this question – even dividing up the passages amongst individuals or pairs) Are there other passages you’ve found helpful in thinking about politics and voting? Briefly put, what is God is saying to us in those passages? (Gen. 1-12, Mark 12:13-17, Rom. 13:1-7, 2 Chron. 7:14, 1 Tim. 2:1-6, Prov. 14:34, Prov. 21:1, 1 Pet. 2:9-12, 13-17, etc.)

  5. What ditch do you tend to fall into with voting: apathy or over-stress? Why?

  6. Review the four major issues foundational for God’s design for government:

    1. The creation and value of human life (Gen. 1, 9).

    2. The establishment and function of the family according to God’s design (Gen. 1–2).

    3. The understanding of right and wrong (Gen. 3).

    4. The worship of God and multiplication of His people (Gen. 6, 8, 9, 12).

  7. What’s a practical step you/we could take to engage in voting in a more wise, Christ-honoring way?
