Asking For A Friend - Week 3 (2023)

Sunday, April 30, 2023

If anyone in the group attended the Q&A panel Sunday evening, you might begin by reflecting or sharing some of the highlights of that event. Remind the group that it was recorded and will be uploaded to the website.

  1. Jason began this week’s sermon by using Genesis 1 to affirm that both men and women share equal worth and giftedness according to God’s design. What are some practical ramifications of that truth?

  2. Define the term “pastor.” (Hint: overseeing and shepherding a local church)

    1. What is connection between the terms pastor and elder?

    2. How does this definition then limit or affect the discussion of women’s

roles in the church? Outside the church?

  3. What are the three reasons this question is relevant to UBC?

  4. Read I Timothy 3:1-3. How does this passage answer our central question?

  5. Read I Timothy 2:11-15. How does this passage answer our central question?

    1. What were the two limitations to a woman’s role in the church? (Hint: authoritative leadership and teaching responsibility over men.)

    2. What are the two specific reasons Paul cites for his instruction to women?

    3. Read Genesis 2:7-9 for help.

    4. How is Paul’s answer, then, rooted in the created order?

  6. Review Jason’s brief reference to “theological triage.” What’s the difference between “primary” and “secondary” and “tertiary” doctrines?

    1. Which is this issue?

  7. How can women use their gifts, then, at UBC?

    1. Share different ways the women in your group do this.

  8. What are ways we might fall into the proverbial “ditch” on either side of this issue?
